How I'm Planning on Upping my Game for Summer

I'm British, so I'm going to talk about the weather, again. We've seen some beautiful weather this week in the UK, which has really got me inspired for the summer months. I've been thinking about plans, as well as where I want to be, physically and mentally to make the most of the summer. There's some recurring themes that I always moan at myself for and feel, frankly pretty shit about, so my plan is to work on cracking all of the below areas bit by bit throughout these summer months.

Early Mornings
Make the most of my day. Being strict with myself when that pesky alarm goes off. Is snoozing REALLY worth it? Last year before I went to Barcelona, I went through about a month of getting up before 6am and hitting the gym, before work. Now by no means take that as a flippant comment, as I really struggle getting out of bed, so this was such a breakthrough for me. But obviously after I got back from my holiday, I lost all motivation for these super early starts. Although it is so much easier to bounce out of bed when the sun is streaming through your window in comparison to cold dark mornings that we've suffered for what seems like forever now. I still struggle to part with the comfort and bliss that I feel when I'm all wrapped up in bed. I'm pushing to get back to the pre-work gym sessions now and I do love the calmness of early mornings before the rush of everybody's day's begin. Hearing nothing but a tiny bit of traffic and the birds is so serene, and always makes me feel productive and happy to be up. Fingers crossed I can up my current game hey.

Endorphins
The Gym. Now isn't this something that everybody always wants to up their game with? I know it is with me. I really wish that I was a natural gym bunny. Don't we all? But the reality is I take a hell of a lot of motivation and inspiration to get my ass in the gym more than once a week. I'm lucky in the sense that because I'm tall (I'm 5"9), I can carry weight quite well. I've never been above a size 10, but I do go through phases where I feel like I'm hitting the borderline with the way my clothes fit me, and I know I need to hit the treadmill hard, so I do, but it never sticks as part of my lifestyle. I want this for more than just aesthetic reasons, I want the endorphins that you get post work-out to be part of my regular day-to-day feelings. The energy that you have after a workout, and the great nights sleep that follows, are all super positive. But I just need to tackle the motivation issue. Any ideas welcome...

My only motivation at the moment is that I'm off to Santorini in June, so this gym-going thing really needs to happen to get me beach-ready, because I'm currently far from that. I have a gym membership, so that's a start.. And I do go once a week already, so I'm not starting from complete scratch. Right?

Wardrobe
This leads on nicely from the last point... I've started to build my holiday wardrobe with the addition of a couple of new bikinis (which are currently stressing me out as I'm not ready for that kind of exposure đź‘€). I've also got a beautiful 80's style spotty crop top which I am super excited to wear from the lovely team at IKRUSH, who I would definitely recommend checking out! They've got some really beautiful and affordable pieces available  on the site, from goregous summer party dresses to cool and slouchy sweater dresses like this Gucci-esque number in these shots, isn't it fab? Anyway, I've tried not to rush into buying a load of new clothes as soon as this sun has come out, as I want to continue my whole vibe of investing in building a solid staple wardrobe rather than throwaway fad pieces. Let me know what trends you're buying into for your summer wardrobes, as I need to start making some decisions!

Coffee
My point now is the opposite of what you might think. Most people want to give up coffee, but I want to get more into it. I really enjoy a good coffee, and LOVE reaping the benefits of the productivity bursts it gives me. But it just isn't part of my daily routine, it's more of random treat now and then.  So that's what I want to change. I'm a tea girl down to the core by nature, and first thing in the morning, that's all I will ever want. So it's not going to be a case of waking up and smelling the coffee, I just need to up my coffee game as a whole. The absolute dream would be to have my own Nespresso machine, as let's face it, most instant coffee, (other than NescafĂ© Azura) is pretty gross. And a Starbucks addiction can be a pricey one.

Fruit & Veg
I don't have the worst diet, but I definitely don't have the best either. I'm quite embarrassed to admit that getting my 5-a-day is very, very rare. But surely that's the case for a lot of people out there? It takes a lot of time and money to create 3 healthy and fresh meals a day, and it's considerably cheaper and more convenient to grab a less-healthy option. I've done a fair bit of research into healthy eating and general health over the past few months, and invested in a few new cookbooks which I do love to use, but working full time honestly wears me out most days, so most of the time I just want something quick, and give in.  It's laziness, I know, so I need to up my game and just get on with it. And I know that our bodies function so much better when we have all that goodness from fruit and veg in us everyday, so that laziness can hopefully combat itself once I make a start.

I've a made start by prepping weekly fruit salads in the fridge for deserts when I'm desperate for a sugar hit, and I also made some incredible  granola slices last week which I think will become a regular in my kitchen. When it comes to snacks these should help keep my junk food intake to a minimum. I'm just not strong enough to say no to chocolate all the time. And look, if I want to dunk a bourbon into my tea after a long day at work, I am not going to deprive myself of that pure bliss. Life is too bloody short for that kind of deprivation. So my next focus needs to be meal prepping for lunches, and planning out dinnertimes for the week to make it easier to get on with when I get home from work, and make sure we have what we need in. Before Luke and I moved in together he used to meal prep his entire week with veg and meat or fish, so we're planning on starting this again for the both of us, fingers crossed it sticks!

Reading
Books, blogs, and news. I want to absorb more of the world that is going on around me. I want to learn and develop my brain. I think my brain has taken a strange turn since graduating university. It's weird how so much of our lives revolve around education, and all of a sudden there is no more requirements for you to learn. So you stop. And I really miss it. I loved education, I just hated the stress of exams. The hole that education seems to have left in my life over the past two years means that I now often find myself getting sucked into my own realm where things seem to fall out of perspective, and I know it's probably because I'm not absorbing enough information about the world around me. Even getting stuck into a good book can do wonders for your brain and imagination, and it was one of my resolutions this year to get back into reading and it's something I want to continue, and do more of, during the summer.

I hope that writing all these points down and putting them out there on this little space of the internet will be an additional seed of motivation to actually power through with them all. I always find that when I tell people about something that I want to achieve, I'm always more likely to succeed. Something to do with not wanting people to think I've failed, as well as myself. Anyone else get that?

  1. I love these points!! Early mornings do definitely get my day off to a much better start however it's SO hard when I'm SO comfy! I agree with the reading also, I left college last year and am currently not in education and feel I have become quite brain dead. I really want to pick up educating myself again as I love learning so much, let me know how these go! I adore this outfit!

  2. Tip about coffee: get a french press/cafetiere! I drink tea during the week so much, but I like to sit and enjoy a good cup of coffee on the weekends. With a french press, you buy the coffee ground you want and then mix it up. You can get some nice caramel syrup at Tesco. You can also look for flavoured coffee grounds. I'm originally from Canada, and Home Sense there has a toasted coconut coffee that is to DIE for. I know Home Sense is started to pop up in the UK, but I haven't been in it to see if it has the coffee selection. Either way, I think a french press is the way to go!

    1. Oh I know! I need to get myself a French press, I had one years ago and loved it but it got so over used that the grains started seeping through (not fab) and if I'm honest, I'd forgotten about it until now so thank-you!
