Why is Burnout becoming Trendy?

"Physical or mental collapse caused by overwork or stress" - Oxford English Dictionary.

First off, I'm not personally burnt out, and I don't know if I actually have ever been. At least not completely. Although I definitely think my final year at Uni probably brought me closest to my own breaking point. Despite that being a few years ago now, I do feel a pretty deep sense of guilt whenever I'm not working, or somehow being productive, and that feeling really ruins the art of chilling the F out. And I'm pretty sure that chilling out is something that I'm sure I used to be pretty damn good at. For me, I think this uneasy feeling comes from the fact that over the past few years, so many of the people that inspire me are now online business women and are killing it in the blogging game and beyond, most of who have openly documented their 'burnout'.

These women (and many men too) are paving their way to success in an brand new industry where they building are their own personal brand, and so they have to give it their absolute all to get to the level they have achieved. It's completely admirable, it's super impressive, and it's something that seems to be so fulfilling. And as a result, these people are now actually aspirational for so many people. Burnout and all. Hence the guilt I, and so many others, feel for spending my time in any other way but working.

It almost seems that burnout has become a bit of a trendy buzzword nowadays. If you get it then you must be doing something right hey? From Casey Neistat, to InTheFrow, it's happening and it's being spoken about openly online, for the most part. But does this mean that burnout is a necessary right of passage if you want mammoth success online? Can you 'get there' without burning out? Or will you simply platou?

I don't think that's the case at all. I think you can be successful and do well in whatever you so wish, as long as you work hard a and stay true to yourself. I'm a firm believer in 'everything in moderation' (mainly because I can't say no to chocolate), so I think taking time to chill out on the regular is vital for your mental health and wellbeing. And Burnout is frankly the opposite of that, so why, oh why is it trendy?

In light of this thought, I've spent a fair amount of time away from my laptop trying to not feel bad for watching Netflix this weekend, and I'm surprisingly feeling pretty content. I also finally got to take Luke to watch 'A Star Is Born' this weekend (second time for me, and I'd happily go for a third) which he loved of course. And now we are both very much obsessed with the soundtrack, and Bradley Cooper. But there are worse thing to be obsessed with right?
